The top 10 list: the best books of J. R. R. Tolkien

The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

This book is filled with the complete artwork that J.R.R. Tolkien created for The Hobbit. There are more than 100 sketches, paintings, maps, drawings, and plans, and some of them have never even published before.

J.R.R. Tolkien 4-Book Boxed Set: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

We recommend this boxed set, because it includes four of Tolkien’s best works: ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, ‘The Two Towers’, and ‘The Return of the King’.

The Great Tales of Middle-earth: Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien, and The Fall of Gondolin

This is also a boxed set, but now with three of Tolkien’s books, including ‘Children of Húrin’, ‘Beren and Lúthien’, and ‘The Fall of Gondolin’. We think this is a special set, because it is selected by the son of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Tolkien Fantasy Tales Box Set (The Tolkien Reader/The Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales/Sir Gawain and the Green Knight)

Again a boxed set, but this time with four books. Read some of Tolkien’s best poems, stories, and fantasy tales. This is a thoughtful gift for anyone who likes the books written by Tolkien or who enjoys the movies that are based on his books.

The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien

If you already love his books, but would now like to know more about the process of how Tolkien wrote his books, then this is the title you are looking for. Discover how he created his fantasy world and use it as your guide to develop your personal writing skills.

The Book of Lost Tales 1(The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 1)

When Eriol travels to the Lonely Isle, he finds the Elves. They share their story with him about the Lost Tales of Elfinesse. This book by Tolkien is what we now see as the start of his Middle-Earth stories.

The Art of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Tolkien often used drawings or sketches before he put words on paper. They guided him in his story and the development of it. This book, just like the number one on this list, is a book filled with a lot of the artwork that has never been seen before.

Tales from the Perilous Realm

We recommend this work by Tolkien, because many people forget it about it when looking at his more famous books. This one, however, is comprised of five of his shorter stories. Included are: ‘Roverandom’, ‘Farmer Giles of Ham’, ‘The Adventures of Tom Bombadill’, ‘Leaf by Niggle’, and ‘Smith of Wootton Major’.

The Hobbit; or, There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien (2012) Paperback

This is the classic we all know or heard of. If you haven’t read it yet, be sure not to miss this book that is in many people’s homes. If you have already seen the film series, it is still worth diving into the words that are printed on paper. It will feed your imagination.

Letters From Father Christmas

After doing some research, we find this book by Tolkien one of his most special and personal works. Every Christmas Tolkien’s children received a letter from Father Christmas, and in it he would write some of the most amazing stories from what had happened to him at the North Pole. Anyone can appreciate this gift, especially at the end of December.
